Threading vs. Waxing: Which Is Better for Facial Hair?

It’s the question we hear most at the studio: “Should I thread or wax?” And since Arya Threading & Waxing does both every single day, we can give you an honest answer instead of a sales pitch. The short version: for the face, threading wins for most people. For the body, waxing wins. Here’s the reasoning, so you can decide for your own skin.

How Each Method Actually Works

Threading uses a doubled, twisted strand of cotton thread. As the artist rolls the twist across your skin, it catches hairs and lifts them out at the root — a few hairs at a time, with complete control over exactly which ones. Nothing but thread ever touches your skin.

Waxing applies warm wax that adheres to many hairs at once, then removes them all in a single pull. It’s fast and thorough over larger areas — one pull can clear what threading would take a minute to cover.

Both remove hair from the root, so both last weeks rather than days. The differences show up in precision, skin impact, and where on your body you’re using them.

Round 1: Precision — Threading

For eyebrows, precision is everything. A brow shape is a design measured in single hairs, and thread can remove one specific hair while leaving its neighbor. Wax removes everything under the strip — which is why over-waxed brows from quick salon jobs are so common, and why brows waxed too aggressively for years can stop growing back. If you’re growing out your brows or repairing an old shape, threading is the only method that can work around the regrowth selectively.

Round 2: Sensitive Skin — Threading

Wax involves warmth, adhesion, and a layer of skin cells coming off with the strip. For most body areas, that’s fine — it’s even part of why waxed skin feels so smooth. But facial skin is thinner, and if you use retinol, AHAs, or acne medications, waxing can lift more than you bargained for. Threading touches only the hair. That’s why estheticians themselves usually thread their faces — and why dermatology-cautious clients get threaded even while on treatment.

Round 3: Speed Over Large Areas — Waxing

Nobody threads legs. For legs, arms, underarms, back, and bikini area, waxing covers ground dramatically faster and just as effectively. This isn’t a close call — it’s why our body waxing menu is all wax, and our face menu is all thread.

Round 4: Peach Fuzz — Threading (with a caveat)

Fine vellus hair — the “peach fuzz” that makes foundation look textured — is where threading shines on the face: it catches hairs too short and fine for wax to grip. The caveat: on the body, fuzz is better handled by wax simply because of the area involved (see: back waxing, where wax removes fuzz beautifully across a big canvas).

Round 5: Pain — a Tie, Honestly

Both pull hair from the root; neither is painless; neither is as bad as first-timers fear. Threading feels like rapid tiny plucks; waxing is one sharper moment per section, over faster. Almost everyone finds both easier with each visit as regrowth gets finer. If you’re nervous, start with a small area — an upper lip thread takes five minutes, and you’ll know exactly how your skin responds.
