Brow Lamination Aftercare: The First 24 Hours and Beyond
The single most important rule for brow lamination aftercare is this: keep your brows completely dry for the first 24 hours — no water, no sweat, no steam, and no products on them. That one window does more to determine how long your lamination lasts than anything you do afterward. Here’s exactly what to do in that first day, and how to keep your brows looking freshly laminated for the full 6–8 weeks instead of fading out at week three.
Why the First 24 Hours Matter So Much
Brow lamination works by breaking down the hair’s internal bonds with a perming solution, resetting the hairs into an upward, uniform shape, then sealing that shape back in with a neutralizer. That neutralizer needs time to fully cure. Introduce water, sweat, or steam before it’s set, and the bonds can relax back toward their original direction — which is why brows that get wet too soon start looking patchy or flat within days instead of holding their sleek, brushed-up shape for weeks.
Hour by Hour: The First 24 Hours
- Right after your appointment: Your brows may look slightly stiff, shiny, or “too perfect.” That’s normal — they relax into a more natural finish within a day.
- 0–24 hours: No water on the brows at all. That means washing your face carefully around them, skipping the gym or anything that makes you sweat, and avoiding steam from showers, cooking, or saunas.
- No makeup, brow gel, or skincare products directly on the brows during this window, including your usual serums if they touch the brow area.
- Don’t touch, pick, or brush the hairs. Let them set exactly where they were placed.
- Sleep on your back if you can, or at least avoid pressing your face into a pillow in a way that flattens the brows overnight.
Days 2–7: Easing Back to Normal
Once the 24-hour mark passes, you can resume washing your face and showering normally — just be gentle when cleansing near the brows rather than scrubbing directly over them. This is also when you can start:
- Brushing brows upward with a clean spoolie once a day to keep the shape crisp
- Applying a light brow oil or castor oil to condition the hairs (ask your artist for a recommendation)
- Wearing makeup again, including brow gel if you want extra hold
Avoid retinol, glycolic acid, or other exfoliating actives directly on the brow area for the first week — they can be harsh on the skin right after the lamination process and may irritate it.
Weeks 2–8: Making It Last
Brow lamination typically lasts 6–8 weeks, and a few habits stretch that timeline:
- Brush daily. Hairs naturally want to fall back into their old growth pattern over time; a quick upward brush each morning keeps them trained.
- Avoid heavy oil-based products directly on the brows in the first couple of weeks — they can loosen the hold faster than water alone.
- Protect brows in the pool and ocean. Chlorine and saltwater speed up fading more than daily showering does, so a swim cap edge or just extra care around the brows helps if you’re a regular swimmer.
- Don’t over-pluck or wax between lamination sessions. Removing hairs disrupts the uniform look you paid for. If shaping is needed, a quick eyebrow threading touch-up around the perimeter is safer than plucking laminated hairs themselves.
Pairing Lamination With Tint
Many of our Jurupa Valley and Eastvale clients book eyebrow tinting in the same visit as lamination — the combination gives you both the shape and the color depth, so sparse areas look fuller without daily filling-in. If you go this route, the same 24-hour water-free window applies to both services, so plan the appointment for a day you don’t have an early morning workout or swim planned.
Signs You Waited Too Long Between Touch-Ups
If your brows start looking flat, or a few hairs are pointing the wrong direction while most still hold the upward brush, that’s the lamination growing out rather than a mistake in aftercare — it just means it’s time to rebook. Most regulars come in every 6–8 weeks to stay ahead of that in-between stage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wash my face the same day as brow lamination?
You can wash your face, but keep water off the brows themselves for the first 24 hours. Rinse carefully around them rather than over them.
Can I wear makeup right after brow lamination?
Avoid makeup directly on the brows for the first 24 hours. After that, brow gel, powder, and pencil are all fine again.
Does brow lamination damage your natural brow hair?
When done correctly with properly timed processing, lamination is not more damaging than a perm on scalp hair. Over-processing or doing it too frequently (more often than every 6–8 weeks) is what leads to dry, brittle hairs — which is why we space appointments out and check hair condition at each visit.
How long does brow lamination last?
Most clients get 6–8 weeks before the effect fully grows out, longer with consistent brushing and less water exposure in the early days.
Can I get my brows wet in the shower the next day?
Yes — once you’re past the 24-hour mark, normal showering is fine.
