How to Prepare for Your First Bikini or Brazilian Wax
If you’ve never been waxed before, the nerves are normal — almost every first-timer who sits down at our studio says some version of “I don’t know what to expect.” Here’s the honest, practical version: what to do beforehand, what actually happens, and why the first visit is usually the hardest one you’ll ever have.
Before You Book
Grow it out first. Wax needs hair about ¼ inch long — roughly two to three weeks of growth after your last shave — to grip properly. If you shaved recently, wait rather than booking too early; too-short hair means a less effective wax and more discomfort for less result.
Time it around your cycle. Skin tends to be more sensitive in the few days right before your period. If you have the flexibility, booking the week after your period ends is usually the most comfortable window. It’s not required — plenty of clients book whenever works for their schedule — but it’s worth knowing if you have a choice.
Skip the caffeine and alcohol that morning. Both can make skin more reactive. A light meal beforehand helps too — waxing on an empty stomach makes any sensation feel bigger than it is.
Exfoliate the day before, not the day of. A gentle exfoliation 24 hours ahead clears dead skin so the wax grips hair, not skin. Exfoliating right before your appointment can leave skin too sensitive.
What Actually Happens
At Arya, bikini and Brazilian waxing happens in a private room, one client at a time — never a shared space. We use a gentle chocolate wax, which sets slightly softer than traditional strip wax and grips hair more than skin, which means less discomfort and fewer broken hairs. Your esthetician will talk you through each step before doing it — nothing is a surprise.
A first appointment runs about 30–40 minutes, a few minutes longer than a repeat visit, because your esthetician is learning your hair growth pattern for next time. Bikini waxing clears everything outside the panty line; a Brazilian removes everything front to back, your choice on how much (or little) to leave. You decide the coverage — there’s no “default,” and you can always ask for less than you think you want on a first visit and go further next time.
Is It Painful?
It’s brief discomfort, not pain that lingers — most people describe it as a quick pinch, over in seconds per section, and it’s virtually always less intense than people brace for beforehand. It’s genuinely easier the second time, because your hair grows back finer and sparser, and because you know what to expect. The dread is almost always worse than the appointment.
Right After Your Appointment
- No hot tubs, pools, saunas, or tanning for 24–48 hours — skin needs time to close.
- Skip tight leggings or workout gear the rest of the day; loose, breathable clothing reduces irritation.
- Avoid touching or re-exfoliating for at least 24 hours.
- Mild redness or small bumps are normal and usually settle within a day. If bumps linger past a few days, gentle exfoliation and a fragrance-free moisturizer usually help — ask your esthetician for a product recommendation.
When to Book Your Next One
Every four weeks is the sweet spot for most clients — long enough for hair to reach a workable length, short enough that regrowth never gets to look or feel like it did before your first wax. See our full Brazilian wax timeline for the week-by-week breakdown.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should my hair be before a first wax?
About ¼ inch — roughly two to three weeks of growth. If you shaved very recently, it’s fine to wait and book once it’s grown in more.
Will it hurt?
Expect a brief pinch per section, not lasting pain. Most first-timers say it was easier than they expected, and it gets progressively more comfortable at each visit as hair grows in finer.
Do I need to do anything special the day of?
Wear comfortable clothing, skip caffeine/alcohol beforehand, and arrive without having exfoliated that same day (do it the day before instead).
Is it private?
Yes — one client, one private room, always. Your esthetician will explain each step before doing it.
